Does Make up Age Your Skin

Does Make up Age Your Skin

It is internationally known that most women wear make up to one degree or the other. This includes foundation, mascara, lipstick, and so on. While its use and application may help hide facial blemishes (which you can check over here) and give a better appearance, the big question remains: “does make up age your skin?” The short answer to this age-old question is YES, but let us examine how this happens and explore solutions and alternatives.

Adverse effects of ingredients in make up

If it is true that make up age your skin, then what is the reason behind it? Well, the reality is that there are a number of chemicals in make up which take a negative toll on not only the skin, but on general health as well. The following are some of such chemicals.

Quaternium 15: This is a common substance found in mascara, eyeliners, and pressed powders. It is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative which causes skin irritation and sensitivity.

Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs): These are petroleum-based compounds. One major problem with PEGs is that they aid in the penetration/absorption of other harmful ingredients into your skin which causes further damage.

Butylated compounds: These include BHT and BHA, which disrupt the endocrine system and also induce skin allergies. In addition to these, make up age your skin indirectly through other ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, octinoxate, siloxanes, and carbon black.

Sleeping with make up worsens the problem

Every now and then some women fall asleep in their make up, for example due to exhaustion after work. Doing this even just a few times here and there makes the make up age your skin. This is because the skin naturally renews itself at night, but make up will obstruct it from going through the process thereby damaging the skin. Foundation and other products breakdown during the day; they’ve also been exposed to and reacted with environmental pollutants, bacteria, and dust from outdoors. A mixture of all these prevents the skin-renewing process called microcirculation. This results in breakdown of collagen, leading to wrinkles and other signs of ageing. This is a major way which make up age your skin.

Natural alternatives to make up

We have established that make up age your skin, but thankfully, you can still get all the benefits of make up without the damaging chemicals, by opting for natural or organic alternatives. “Certified Organic” and “Certified Natural” products are made using 95-100% naturally-occurring substances including aloe vera, essential oils, beeswax, lavender flower water, rosemary, jojoba, and many others. Artificial make up age your skin, but the safe and natural alternative is always available.

Anti-ageing products

The most important active ingredient for anti-ageing is tretinoin. Tretinoin is only available by prescription, and is included in many low-cost generic brands as well as the high-end brands. Some people believe that applying the product more abundantly will produce better and quicker results, which is simply not the case as overdoing it might actually cause irritation. Make up age your skin, but an anti-ageing product when properly used, is one way to combat wrinkles and help restore strength and elasticity.

Some simple ways to help your skin

We have seen that artificial make up age your skin, and switching to natural alternatives and using an  anti-ageing product will be extremely helpful. But the best things you can do to reduce skin ageing are actually quite simple, and we will look at some of them below.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER: this naturally helps to detoxify the body and improve your skin’s health and texture.

SLEEP GOOD: 8 hours a night is highly recommended, as this gives your skin good time to renew itself each day.

PROPER DIET: vegetables and bright-coloured fruits are packed with vitamins and minerals that naturally rejuvenate the skin. A balanced diet containing proteins, carbs, and oil is also necessary for an overall healthy body.

EXERCISE: regular exercises not only provide resistance and strength for your skin, but you also sweat which helps to dispel toxins from the skin and body.

QUIT SMOKING: everybody knows that smoking does significant damage to your skin and leaves you with wrinkled, damaged, unhealthy skin in the long run. Quitting ASAP will do your skin a massive favour.

SUN PROTECTION: many studies and research have shown that sun damage is the number one reason for accelerated skin ageing. Use a simple sunscreen that includes both UVA and UVB protection when going out in the sun. Wearing protective clothing and a hat on very sunny days is encouraged.
